L Word Casting Call

By now, I'm sure you've heard about the reality show version of the L Word that's being put together. I mentioned it a few days ago on the blog, and I've seen it all OVUH the lesbian airwaves (or something). The initial reaction has been mostly negative, from what I've seen. But you know what? Guarantee you, you'll be watching that ish. I've said it before and I'll say it again, Ilene is a diabolical (and bi-abolical) GENIUS!

Here are the deets in case you wanna like...apply, or whatever. Oh and if you're going out for what you consider to be the *Helena* role, please email me first, so we can workshop it. And by "workshop it," I of course mean, "so that I may have sex with your body, face, and torso area, and film it, and then watch it with you while having more sex about your person."

**NOW CASTING**

“THE REAL L WORD: Los Angeles”

Are you and your friends proof the The L Word exists in real life?
The L Word was a runaway iconic hit, affecting millions of lives – imagine what the real life version will do!

From Showtime, Golden Globe winner Ilene Chaiken (The L Word) and Magical Elves (Peabody Award-winning Project Runway & Emmy-nominated Top Chef) comes a documentary series about the real lives of lesbians.

THE REAL L WORD: Los Angeles will follow a group of real-life, high-profile, left coast lesbians as they go about their daily lives, at work and play. The producing team plans to show viewers that the cast can be every bit as glamorous, fashionable, fabulous and even as cutthroat as their celebrated-but-fictional counterparts.

We are currently seeking ladies from all walks of life to be the pioneering voices in this important series. Must be based in Los Angeles or moving soon to the area.

We want all types, from the power of Bette to the mojo of Shane.

Are you and your partner about to adopt? Do all the bouncers in WeHo know your name? Do you consider your friends family? Are you coming out of the closet and want to help others by sharing your journey? Are you or someone you know moving out to the more Sapphic-ly welcoming culture of L.A.? Are you a card-carrying 'power lesbian'?

Whatever your story, whatever your situation - we want to hear from you!

Please email casting@magicalelves.com; tell us about yourself, and include a recent photo.

"do young people ever just trip on living?"

the title of this entry comes from a book i recently finished enititled Soul On Bikes, written by Tobie Gene Levingston, president and founder of the East Bay Dragons Motorcycle Club. If you haven't read this book, nor are you familiar with the Black Biker Set across america, i highly suggest you find a copy and holler back. this quote in particular struck a chord with me because it had me reflect upon how so many young men and women in my generation have yet to experience the awesomeness of life in it's rawest state. so many of us, myself included, get caught up in the bullshit of being young, while dealing with the reality of adulthood, and wanting to be creatively successful, but facing external and monetary blah, blah, blah...

anyway, what makes you trip on life? can you even identify what that is? or what it means for that matter?? i spent my sunday with kesh for a kitty & congo meeting and mini-photoshoot, and though i had a pretty gnarly head cold, and we only had two hours of free time (well, business time is what we initially had in mind), we ended up just really "lifing" out, if you will. we were both a bit stressed from this past week's personal business and extraneous adventures, and we started with a very constructed plan.

and then out came the craft bag.....

and from the craft bag came leather chord, gold, purple, and ivory colored beads, and copper coil.....

and then came kesh's newly thrifted, amazingly printed sheets......

add a heat lamp, kesh's self timer skills, and my affinity for jumping around.....

and what started as work, work, work, turned into play, play, play.

and quite a lovely way to spend my day off, i will say. (depsite my stuffy nose)

new project time: kitty & congo.

warrior steeze, please.

quick cut for break time. and acting like jerks....
attempting to make serious faces with the outfits we made from bedsheets and plastic craft beads.

and then fun with shadows!

making shadows in the congo

(and then kesh had to learn the hard way how fidgity i am in front of a camera...)
hello kitty

sometimes all it takes is the little things to remind you that your business can be pleasure. perhaps keep that in mind.

paz.

love,
erin.

Leave a comment and let me know if you're going to Washington, D.C. for this. Please let me know why or why not. I'd love to get an idea of who I may see there when I go...and if there are any people not supporting this, what their reasoning behind that decision is. Thanks! -Arlan

UPDATE! Read what guest blogger (and my soon to be British lover--she just doesn't know it yet) Rachel has to say about why SHE is traveling from her college in Illinois to D.C. for the march:

...It seems to me that the LGBT crowd are still so marginalised that many people don't realise just how many of them there are, just how many people are being denied their civil rights. For this reason, I think that the Washington March on October 11th is incredibly important, if only to open the eyes of the general public to the passion that is behind those simple boxes on a ballot slip. Did voters realise the hurt they caused when they checked yes? I'm not so sure. Did they realise that there are couples that are proud to be in love, and want to share it with the world, only to be told that the world doesn't want it to be shared?

This isn't even about marriage, it's about equality, it's about those 38 states that will still allow a bigot to fire you for your sexual orientation; it's about couples that want and need to be able to share healthcare but can't because their love can't be legalised.

It's about standing up and telling the world that this is not enough. It's about the right to be more than just 'tolerated', the right to be accepted. It's about people that are sick of being told that their love is dirty, that their hearts aren't pure, that their sex is something to be ashamed of. It's for everyone that is too scared to hold hands or kiss in public.

It's for all those whose deaths were not important enough to be reported in the media. It's for all those who have been a victim of a hate crime that the police did not see as a hatecrime. All those who 'asked for it', who 'provoked it', who 'should have known better' than to be themselves. This march is for all those who are sick of being a second-class citizen, or having their friends and family treated as a second-class citizen.

That is why I will be marching. Will you?

Can I Getta Scoop...

My birthday is a few weeks away. Christmas is right around the corner. Someone--for the love of baby Jesus--get this for me as a gift please:

I want the wheel of GREAT fortune thing they've got going on, the vat of caramel, a silly co-host (Cat Deeley, please?) and a line of women who are willing to dip their goods in said caramel with me and said co-host watching.

I seriously will never be able to fully convey to you how much I love caramel, boobs and women who let me put caramel on their boobs.

Got an Extra Mil? Buy Laurel Holloman's House.

L Word/Girltrash director/writer Angela Robinson just tweeted this on her public twitter account:

If anybody's looking, Laurel Holloman's house for sale - $838000 - open house is oct 4th. 127 n hobart, LA, 90004 - check it out

That's cool, but I'd rather buy Bette & Tina's place. At last count, it had 14 kitchens, 3 locations, and 1 and half bedrooms. That's my kinda place. It does have that annoying habit of losing angelic kids though and returning them mysteriously 3 or 4 episodes months later.

Cause They're Lesbians: They're Dykey, Dykey

This was added to youtube almost 2 years ago, but I think its high time we made it our new themesong? Thanks Jennifer for sharing this with me on Facebook:-)

Prepare thine eyes/ears for jubilation :

Oh and if you listen closely to the beginning, they're saying something like they "look" like lesbians, as if they aren't. My lesbi-sense tells me there's fuckery afoot. Cause if they've never shared a naked embrace in some sort of wooded area, my name isn't Arlan Mcphee!

reboot part deux.

so, i unexpectedly had to cut the last entry short, just as i was getting to the peak of my previous brain explosion. so now, it's a matter of picking up where i left off, or just skipping all the bullshit and getting to the good stuff......

well, hmmmmm, the good stuff it is!

every year or so, i've tried to make it a habit to have a new project of some sort going on. for a very long time, it was making clothing. i was never into the bourgeois (spelling??) fashionista thing. i was always about just making stuff i love, making what feels great on the body available and accessible to the public, and sharing what i was doing with whomever seemed fit. see squirrelygee vintage for reference @ myspace.com/squirrelygeevintage. and on and off for as long as however long it has been, i've exhibited work as a painter and illustrator with some extremely sick and amazingly talented artists (for which i am soooooo grateful). fuck, i mean, for real, visual art has alwaysssssss been my thang (definitely not just my thing). here's a little bit of this and that.
i used to be crazy, but now i'm alright.

and then there was the hilarious, yet surprisingly awesome run with my best friend kara, and a little something we called yellow cakes. which was around the time i met my homegirl, kesh. (side note, kara has the voice of a fucking angel. find her!!) anyway, this was us then,

yellow cakes opening for aleks & the drummer 6/6/08
snow adventure round one.
and then again..
a night at gallery.
and we had a blast!! 2007 was quite a year.

though we've all been on our own shit, we've remained friends ever since. sadly (for me), kara moved back to the bay, and then on to atlanta, kesh went back to england, and then bounced right back to america (woohoo!), and i joined an art collective, the upset, started helping out at this sick local arts organiztaion (check out rumble arts and/or UPSET magazine) and separately started curating a couple of art shows here and there in chicago.

flash forward to 2009. with some stuff put on the back burner, i spent a litle bit of time doing some much needed traveling across the country, trying to figure out what the hell needed to change. and kesh, to my surprise moved to chicago. yayyyyy! and after confiding with each other about what paths we were both taking, we decided it was time to do something. and despite or solo agendas, it would be prime to do something together. and this time around, have it benefit others. so booyah!

enter kitty & congo!

kittyandcongo

...where 20% of everything we receive from our new music-yyy project will be donated to funds in africa as well as domestic areas where essential learning and living and creative supplies are needed, and completely laking. we intend to travel and see everything we can posibly take in and put our energy toward the fortune of others. and hope that somehow people will feel the impact, no matter how realistically great or how slight it is, and that perhaps others can be inspired to do the same. who knows how it will turn out, but we're pretty fucking stoked to know that this is our joint focus and the main goal.

reboot!

it's been too long since my last entry, and for that i apologize. life has been a whirlwind this summer, leaving me feeling slightly dazed and confused on the regular. it's incredibly easy to get sucked into the daily grind of work, work, work, pay bills, work, work, work. square up. work. rinse. repeat. and unfortunately, for a while there, i felt as if i lost my creative insight. no, no, more like my creative motivation. it's easy to lose sight of alternative visions when your brain is swelling with millions of ideas and projects, without a sense of direction or an outlet t express them through. and it's much easier to have all of those electric sensations get lost under the hubbub of bills and obligations and basic means of survival.

it took a long time for me to realize how badly the stress was totally stunting my growth. it's much easier to see when someone else is getting sucked into a vortex of blah versus yourself. but then comes the mind altering moment, when you go what the fuck?!?!?! why have i not been truly thinking of myself for this long?? why have i only been functioning in autopilot?? where did my capability and motivation go??? and even more so, how the fuck do i get that shit back?????

here is where i temporarily have to cut this edition short, but i'll be back tomorrow with and explosion of awesome! and all the wonderful things to come......

Drew Barrymore. Ellen Page. Kissing. 'Nuff Said.

(from the October 2009 issue of Marie Claire)

Um...

I'm really enjoying the creative promotion thats being done for this film. Get Drew Barrymore and Ellen Page to make out with each other in mainstream women's magazines. Brill.

The movie's called "Whip It!" This is the synopsis from imdb.com:
In Bodeen, Texas, an indie-rock loving misfit finds a way of dealing with her small-town misery after she discovers a roller derby league in nearby Austin.

Drew Barrymore directed and stars in it. Ellen Page stars in it. My all-time favorite SNL actor Kristin Wiig is in it. There's roller derby and girl kisses. Don't know much more than that, but I tell you what: I WILL be in that theater on the first day, popcorn in hand, and a tear in my eye. That's for damn sure.
